17 years ago, Maine Pyaar Kyun Kiya was released on July 15 and emerged as a box office success. Starring Salman Khan, Katrina Kaif, Sushmita Sen, Katrina Kaif and Arshad Warsi, the comedy caper directed by David Dhawan wooed audiences to the theaters thanks to its fun quotient, music and stellar cast. This was also the first time that Salman and his then girlfriend Katrina acted together and the curiosity to see them together also played a role.

However, very few know this Maine Pyaar Kyun Kiya came to the rescue of many office visitors who were stuck in the 26/7 floods in Mumbai. For those who don’t know, on July 26, 2005, Mumbai and its surrounding areas received an unprecedented 944 mm of rainfall within 24 hours. This has led to loss of life and thrown the lives of public transport and passengers out of gear. Trains and buses could not run due to excessive overflow. The rains started around noon. As a result, many had already reached their workplaces by then. Thousands of people then had no choice but to spend the night in their offices as there was no way to get home.

Ajay Bhattacharya, a retired technician, was one such person who was stranded on that fateful day. He said Bollywood Hungama, “My office was near Churchgate and I lived in Mira Road. This was a time when most of the offices were in South Mumbai. Many people were unable to return home and were stranded on the city side. We learned that the trains are closed and returning home by road was out of the question. Me and my colleagues decided to spend the night in our office. However, our offices were not designed for sleeping, for obvious reasons. We weren’t in the mood to go to bed early. So after eating we decided to catch a movie at the nearby Eros cinema. The rains had stopped by then and there was hardly any water and walking to the cinema hall was not a problem.”

Ajay continued, “Maine Pyaar Kyun Kiyahis nightly show was about to start. We bought the tickets. Shockingly, we saw that hundreds of stranded office goers had turned up on Eros! By the time the movie started, the show was sold out. And mind you, Eros was a huge one-screen cinema. So you can imagine how many people must be there.”

Ajay Bhattacharya then said, “The film was a fun watch. Thanks to Maine Pyaar Kyun Kiya, we forgot all our worries and hardships for 3 hours. I can never forget that experience.”

Even other single screen cinemas of South Mumbai that day recorded surprisingly large occupancy. An old timer said Bollywood HungamaDus it was in its third week on 7/26. He played on Minerva and New Empire and had decent results. Bunty Aur Babli ran at New Excelsior while Parineeta he was at Liberty. These films had completed several weeks and still, they had some success. Viruddh, starring Amitabh Bachchan, John Abraham and Sanjay Dutt, was playing in Novelty. It was released 5 days before 7/26 and wasn’t doing so well because of the depressing theme. He also managed to find takers thanks to the floods that day.”

He added, “Then there was also the newly opened Inox multiplex at Nariman Point. All the latest versions played here and Maine Pyaar Kyun Kiya was the first choice as it had just completed 11 days and hence, many had not seen the film. It was also the perfect movie as it was light fun and just what you needed after a long, painful, rainy day!”

He also revealed that “In the suburbs of Mumbai the situation was different. Many areas experienced power outages. Therefore, many theaters had to close after it started raining. Chandan cinema played the last show at 3:30 pm. and canceled the evening and night performances.”
