28 years ago, the blockbuster Mohra, directed by Rajiv Rai, released on 1 July and was the second biggest hit of 1994 after Hum Aapke Hain Koun. Starring Akshay Kumar, Suniel Shetty, Raveena Tandon and Naseeruddin Shah, the film is memorable for many reasons including the music. Raveena went to a different league after that Mohra thanks to her bright and shiny appearance ‘Tip Tip Barsa Paani’ and “Tu Cheez Badi Hai Mast Mast”. Many actresses must have felt jealous to see how much she benefited from this film and how she is still known as “Mast mast Girl’. Hence, it will come as a surprise to fans to know that some heroines had initially refused the film.

Divya Bharti was the first choice and had even started shooting. After her sudden demise, manufacturers began looking for a replacement. According to reports, the film has been offered to Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Sridevi.
Bollywood Hungama spoke exclusively with Shabbir Boxwala, his production designer and co-writer Mohra. He confirmed that both the heroines were indeed offered the film. She explained that since male actors Akshay Kumar and Suniel Shetty were not well-known enough, some heroines of that time were wary of coming on board. However, Aishwarya, who was yet to make her film debut back then, had a different reason to turn down the film.
said Shabbir Boxwala“I saw Aishwarya’s pictures and liked them. Rajiv asked me to call her. But she couldn’t make the film as she was preparing for Miss World.”
Shabbir Boxwala continued, “And yes, we offered Mohra and to Sridevi. However, we didn’t have any big male stars. Akshay and Suniel were not known. So, every heroine would think twice before saying yes Mohra. No one in their wildest dreams imagined this song “Tu Cheez Badi Hai Mast Mast” it would change everything for Akshay and the film!”
