After a successful run at Cannes 2022 where India was the country of honour, this year India will showcase cultural power on the French Riviera.
Information and Broadcasting Minister L Murugan will lead the Indian delegation at this year’s Cannes Film Festival. Interestingly, Murugan will be wearing his traditional Tamil outfit ‘veshti’ on the red carpet.
Last year when India had a host of celebrities on the red carpet, this time too Oscar Award winning Indian director Guneet Monga of ‘The Elephant Whisperers’ fame, Mrs. Manushi Chillar, Indian actress, model and winner of Miss World 2017, Mrs. Esha Gupta – acclaimed Indian Cinema actress and Kangabam Tomba – the famous Manipuri actor walk the red carpet.
Four Indian films entered the official selection of the Cannes Film Festival. Kanu Behl’s ‘Agra’ will be his second film to have its world premiere at Cannes Directors’ Fortnight. His first film in 2014, ‘Titli’, was featured in the ‘Un Certain Regard’ section.
Anurag Kashyap’s ‘Kennedy’ is showing at Midnight Screenings and Nehemich in the La Cinef section of the Cannes Film Festival. Apart from these, many Indian films are slated for screening at Marche du Films.
A restored Manipuri film “Ishanhou” will be featured in the “Classics” section. The film was previously screened in the ‘Un Certain Regard’ section of the festival in 1991 and its films have been preserved by the National Film Archive of India. The Manipur State Film Development Corporation took up the restoration of the film through the Film Heritage Foundation and Prasad Film Labs.
India will continue its push to be the world’s content hub and a one-stop destination from conception to filmmaking to post-production, including graphics and animation and other modern techniques and tools. This was envisioned in a grand way by Union Information and Broadcasting Minister Anurag Singh Thakur during his visit to the festival last year.
Special focus this year will continue to be on India’s culture and heritage at the India Pavilion. The theme of this year’s Pavilion is based on the Goddess of Knowledge, Saraswati, designed by the National Institute of Design, Ahmedabad with the theme – ‘Showcasing India’s Creative Economy’ to the global community.
The design of the stand has been inspired by Saraswati Yantrathe abstract representation of the goddess Saraswati, guardian of knowledge, music, art, speech, wisdom and learning.
The pavilion’s colors draw inspiration from the vibrant colors of the Indian national flag – saffron, white, green and blue.
Saffron for the strength and courage of the country, white for inner peace and truth, green for highlighting the fertility, growth and prosperity of the land and blue for the law of dharma and truth.
India has a huge talent pool and the Indian Pavilion will provide the platform for the Indian Film community to sign distribution deals, greenlight scripts, crack production partnerships and simply network with the world’s major entertainment and media players.
Among the highlights of last year’s festival was the premiere of R Madhavan’s ‘Rocketry’.
