It was a full-on Canadian occupation of Toronto on Wednesday night as fellow Canadian actors Ryan Gosling and Simu Liu hit the town to promote their upcoming fantasy film, Barbie.
Widely regarded as one of the most anticipated films of 2023, the live-action comedy was directed by Greta Gerwig and features Margot Robbie as the iconic 11.5-inch doll and Gosling as Ken.
We don’t know much about the film’s top-secret plot, including Liu’s character, who is vaguely described as a “different variation of Ken.”
Even though the film’s official release is still weeks away, the two Canadian Ken dolls stopped by a private event with five floors of fans in Toronto on Wednesday night.
The “Barbie Kenadian long weekend kick-off” was held on Margoa chic new Mediterranean-inspired restaurant on King Street West — or so we say Knowledge Street West.
The exclusive event featured a pink carpet, Barbie beauty bar and Ken’s “Mojo Dojo Casa House.”
Gosling rocked a dapper blue Ken-style tuxedo, and Liu followed suit in a lime green jacket and mesh knit shirt.
When asked to reveal some details about their characters at the event, Liu once again confirmed the Ken’s contentious rivalry that we’ve been getting a glimpse of in the film’s teasers.
“I’m not going to name any names, but one of the Kens in this movie can come back, and one of the Kens doesn’t. And I think that’s the most important thing that I want you to know about our Ken. It’s a very important part of Barbie history,” Liu said.
“And as a result of that, one of the Kens has a deep well of pain and sadness that he wears sunglasses to try to hide,” Gosling added.
Barbie is set to be released on July 21, 2023.
