Sandra Oh, who played Vice President Gupta in the 2001 film The Princess Diariesexpressed her desire to return for the planned third installment of the franchise.
In an interview with Entertainment WeeklyOh indicated her willingness to reprise the role and see how Gupta has progressed in the world.
“I’m ready for the queen. Call me! I’m dying to see how Gupta has come up in the world.”
The first two films featured Anne Hathaway as Mia Thermopolis and Julie Andrews as the Queen’s grandmother Clarisse Renaldi.
While Anne Hathaway has expressed interest in returning for the third film, Julie Andrews said last year that it may not be possible for her character to return due to timing. Andrews mentioned that discussions for a sequel took place soon after The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement released, but given the years that have passed and the age difference, he doesn’t think it would be practical.
Furthermore, with the death of director Garry Marshall in 2016, Andrews feels it is now too late to revisit the franchise.
“I think we know it’s probably not going to be possible. It was discussed very shortly after two [‘The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement’] came out, but now it’s how many years since then? And I’m much older and Annie the princess, or the queen, is much older. And I’m not sure where it will float or run. As for doing it, I doubt it now.”
