A feature-length animated adaptation based on Hajime Kamoshida’s “Rascal Does Not Dream” novel series focuses on an athlete who gathers the courage to come out of her shell.
Its title is “Rascal Does Not Dream of a Sister Venturing Out.”
The original books, of which more than 2.5 million copies are in print, are a coming-of-age story in an eccentric environment where isolation, inferiority complex and other swinging teenage emotions are referred to as “adolescence syndrome,” which The Gentlemen characters everyone has to deal with.
The film features Kaede, who has been missing for years. Sakuta, her older brother and protagonist of the series, provides support, with the help of others, as she prepares for her high school entrance exams.
“There were some heart-wrenching scenes as I played the character, but I think the film will give every audience a gentle push at the end,” said actress Yurika Kubo, who played the role of Kaede.
Kaede confided that she once developed another personality after being bullied. She worried that her alter ego was more lovable than her real self.
The film begins after the events of ‘Rascal Does Not Dream of Bunny Girl Senpai’, an animated television series that aired in 2018.
“I felt like this‘it’s time,’ but at the same time, I also felt nervous because the story is alive and serious,” she said.
“She (Kaede) is in a weird situation and her emotions are in a mess, but she’s trying her best to focus on her studies,” Kubo added. “That’s because she wants to repay her brother and others who supported her and get a real sense that it’s okay to be here.”
The film is currently showing nationwide.
