The Barbie craze is sweeping the nation with the release of the new Barbie movie, and no one is more excited to see the movie than the Barbies of Aspen.
“The film enters a world of colorful characters who express many of our own fantasies and desires,” said the Aspen Barbies, joking that the film was inspired by them.
You’ve probably seen the Aspen Barbies around town, or maybe you’ve seen their pink theme Instagram page (@BarbiesofAspen). The group started in January 2022 and consists of anyone from ski instructors to bartenders to local business owners.
“If you’re skiing or walking around town and you have to stop to look at someone, it’s usually a Barbie or a Ken. Think of it this way: A Barbie is a showstopper, someone who dresses and behaves in a way that demands your attention, for better or worse,” said Barbies of Aspen.
No, you don’t have to be Barbie or Ken to join in the fun. Barbies of Aspen is for those, um, more extravagant people who don’t mind the limelight. Having or wearing a lot of pink is a bonus.
Barbies have a special connection to the beauty of Aspen in summer and fall. One thing that sets them apart in town is how “picture perfect” everyone always looks, no matter the weather.
“Barbies of Aspen is a visual representation of our glamor with an almost unattainable level of physical perfection. This obsession can be highly humorous and entertaining as we all have an inner Barbie or Ken inside us,” they said.
The Barbie Movie is playing at the Isis Theater in Aspen and Movieland in Basalt.
