Legendary director Kamal Amrohi’s 1949 classic Mahal is all set to release at Mumbai’s iconic Regal cinema on July 26. The print was recently made by the Film Heritage Foundation.
Speaking on the occasion, director’s son Tajdar Amrohi said, “1949 was my father’s year Mahal was released. Now it’s 2023… So many generations of moviegoers love his work. It wasn’t just for Pakeezah. His talent was much deeper than people imagined. He wrote films like Mughal-e-Azam. He directed timeless films like Mahal, Dil Aur Preet Parai and Pakeezah. But if you ask me to name his best work, it would have to be Daaera. A film way ahead of its time, a judge of the Allahabad High Court had stated, “It is unfortunate that Daaera was rejected by the audience, not only because it is such a great film, but also because Kamal Amrohi would never again dare to direct such a bold subject.”
Tazdar wants Daeera to be re-mastered and viewed as Mahal. He said, “Of course I’m very happy about it Mahal it has been restored for new generations and is being shown again. I am honored to have been invited as the chief guest. I remember being at the Maratha Mandir with my father and Choti Ammi (Meena Kumari) for its premiere Pakeezah on February 4, 1972. But the very next day, February 5, 1972, I was at the Regal Cinema to see Pakeezah. I never went back to Regal again. Now on July 26th I will be at Regal Cinema again for my father Mahal. If that’s not nostalgia, what is?’
Tajdar was invited to speak at his screening Mahal. “I wouldn’t know where to start. My father was much more than his films,” he said.
