NYC-based LGBTQ+ film festival NewFest has debuted its 35th festival, which runs from October 12th to October 24th.
A number of the festival’s headline films include Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi and Jimmy Chin’s “Nyad,” which will tell the story of Diana Nyad, starring Annette Bening and Jodie Foster. Hirokazu Kore-eda’s Cannes award-winning “Monster” will receive its New York premiere, while the world premiere of “The Aggressives” follow-up “Beyond The Aggressives: 25 Years Later” will be sporting.
Emma Fidel’s documentary ‘Queen of New York’ will highlight Marti Cummings’ journey to become the first non-binary candidate elected to the New York City Council, serving as a centerpiece of New York as told by Billy Porter.
As previously announced, George C. Wolfe’s “Rustin” will open the festival while Andrew Haigh’s “All of Us Strangers” will close.
In addition, the festival will hold advanced screenings of Showtime/Paramount+’s “Fellow Travelers” starring Matt Borner and Jonathan Bailey. Max’s “Our Flag Means Death” starring Taikia Waititi and Minnie Driver will also air episodes from Season 2.
Other highlights include the New York premiere of Luke Gilford’s National Anthem, the Anne Hathaway thriller Eileen and the Erica Tremblay-directed Fancy Dance.
4K restorations of Isaac Julien’s 1991 “Young Soul Rebels” and Stephen Winter’s 1996 “Chocolate Babies” will have their New York premieres.
Oscar- and Emmy-nominated director Todd Haynes is set to receive the Queer Visionary Award, accompanied by a screening of “May December,” starring Natalie Portman and Julianne Moore.
