Director and former Monty Python member Terry Gilliam said he wants to Johnny Depp to play the role of Satan in his new film.
Variety reported the new information Gilliam revealed while attending the Red Sea Film Festival. Outlining the general plot of The Carnival at the End of Days – his upcoming comedy – the director casually stated that he would like Depp to play the role of the devil, and later told the paper that he felt confident about it.
“God is wiping out humanity and the only character who wants to save it is Satan, and Johnny Depp plays Satan,” Gilliam said. “This is a simple story of God wiping out humanity to destroy his beautiful garden Earth… There is only one character who tries to save humanity and that is Satan, because without humanity he has lost his job and is an eternal character and so to live without work is terrible. So he finds some young people and tries to convince God that these young people are the new Adam and Eve. God can still wipe out humanity. It’s a comedy.”
Who writes Carnival at the end of days?
Christopher Brett Bailey co-wrote the film with Gilliam. The director’s most recent film was 2018’s The Man Who Killed Don Quixote — a comedy adventure film that famously took nearly three decades to make and has two separate documentaries (Lost in La Mancha and He Dreams of Giants) in its development . The latter film ended up starring Adam Driver, Jonathan Pryce, Stellan Skarsgård and Olga Kurylenko.
