A Barbenheimer-filled Golden Globe seems inevitable, but how many nominations will these two summer blockbusters garner?
Warner Bros.’s “Barbie” is expected to dominate the nominations presented Monday, Dec. 11, with about nine nods, including one for best picture in the comedy or musical category. In particular, Margot Robbie, Ryan Gosling and America Ferrera are expected to secure three acting nominations. If the film achieves that big total, it would tie for the second-most nominations in Globes history, behind Bob Fosse’s “Cabaret” (1972). The all-time record with 11 nominations is Robert Altman’s “Nashville.”
Close behind in the rankings is Universal Pictures’ “Oppenheimer,” which is expected to secure eight nominations, including best picture in the drama category, as well as nods for Christopher Nolan’s direction and three performance mentions for Cillian Murphy, Robert Downey Jr and Emily Blunt.

The Globes are embracing a new era with the Hollywood Foreign Press Association now disbanded and several problematic members kicked out. Traditionally second only to the Oscars in terms of viewership, the key annual awards season aims to regain its former glory under new leadership, creating memorable and enjoyable events.
The expansion of nominations – from five to six in each category – offers more opportunities for acting, film and television nominees to seek recognition from the Academy of Motion Picture and Television Arts. In addition, two new categories aim to celebrate film achievements and stand-up comedy performances. Each category will nominate six nominees, except for the new best motion picture and grossing achievement (reserved for films grossing more than $150 million, with at least $100 million in the US). The first category will have eight candidates.
In stand-up, Chris Rock’s “Selective Outrage” for Netflix could probably secure a spot, along with other streaming comedians like John Mulaney (“Baby J”), Tom Segura (“Sledgehammer”) and Wanda Sykes (“I’m an Entertainer”). Max (ex-HBO) is also expected to shine with performances by Sarah Silverman (“Someone You Love”), Marc Maron (“From Bleak to Dark”) and Marlon Wayans (“God Loves Me”).
On the series front, Max’s “Succession,” Apple’s “Ted Lasso” and Netflix’s “Beef” are standing strong with multiple nominations. New shows like Disney’s “Ashoka” or Apple’s “Lessons in Chemistry” can break out, especially with top stars like Rosario Dawson and Brie Larson. Surprises are always possible, leaving room for inclusions like Lily Rose-Depp or Rachel Sennott from HBO’s “The Idol,” despite mixed reviews.
