Ed Sheeran penned song for upcoming Christmas movie

by Stewart Cole

Ed Sheeran wrote a Christmas song for a new Netflix movie.

The animated holiday film, That Christmas, is set in Suffolk and will feature the singer’s track, called Under The Tree.

This Christmas is co-written by Richard Curtis, who lives in Suffolk and is the director behind Love Actually, Notting Hill and Four Weddings and a Funeral.

Sheeran, who lives near Framlingham, described the film as “so emotional, but so funny”.

“I’ve been friends with Richard Curtis for years, and we’ve done a lot of fun work for charity, and then we were both heavily involved in the movie Yesterday,” Sheeran said.

“He came to me two years ago to play me the gruff one on Christmas Eve.

“It was just skits and voices, but it blew me away. So emotional, but so touchingly funny, like all Richard Curtis movies.”

Sheeran said he felt there was a “real lack of great animated Christmas films for kids” and “it felt so good to be creating something for my kids to watch”.

“I find it crazy that there aren’t more animated Christmas movies for kids, but this will become a holiday staple, at least in our household,” he added.

Curtis said he was “thrilled” to work with Sheeran.

“It’s a film set in Suffolk,” he explained.

“Ed lives and loves Suffolk and completely understood the pitch and tone of what we were trying to do.

“We’ve been friends for many years and – especially now that he’s a husband and father – it’s really wonderful that he’s playing such a key role in this film about love, children and family.

“And, of course, even if he wasn’t a friend and loved Suffolk, how wonderful to have a great new song from one of the greatest British songwriters of all time.”

The film, which was also written by Peter Souter and directed by Simon Otto, will be released on December 6.
