During D23, Disney released a new Moana 2 trailer for the highly anticipated sequel to the 2016 animated hit. It shows new footage from Auli’i Cravalho’s Moana and Dwayne Johnson’s Maui. Directed by David G. Derrick Jr., it is slated to hit theaters on Wednesday, November 27, 2024.
“Moana 2 reunites Moana and Maui three years later for an expansive new journey alongside a crew of unlikely sailors,” reads the film’s official synopsis. “After receiving an unexpected call from her wayfinding ancestors, Moana must journey across the distant seas of Oceania and into dangerous, long-lost waters for an adventure unlike anything she’s ever faced.”

Who is in Moana 2?
The Moana 2 cast also includes returning stars Rachel House (Moana’s Grandma, Tala), Temuera Morrison (Moana’s father, Chief Tui), and Nicole Scherzinger (Moana’s mother, Sina). The film also features the voices of Hualālai Chung, David Fane, and Rose Matafeo as Moana’s new crew members, Moni, Kele, and Loto, respectively. Awhimai Fraser voices the mysterious new character Matangi. Gerald Ramsey plays Moana’s ancestor, Tautai Vasa. and Khaleesi Lambert-Tsuda lends her voice to Moana’s lovable and adorable little sister, Simea.
The original film was directed by Ron Clements and John Musker. Not only was it a commercial success with a gross of over $600 million, but it also earned positive reviews from critics and earned two Academy Award nominations, including Best Animated Feature and Best Original Song.
