Just like that, Attack on Titan is back one last time

by Stewart Cole

Before Attack on Titan The anime finally ended at the end of last year, it was a run that the show wouldn’t end. Being split into four parts over three years has given it a notorious reputation, and it turns out we’re not done yet.

Earlier today, Studio MAPPA revealed that they have another movie in the series in the works. With the appropriate title Attack on Titan The Movie: The Last Attack, the 145-minute film includes the last two parts of the anime’s final season (so episodes 29-35). Talking to you Crunchyrollseries director Yuichiro Hayashi said that the visuals will be updated from their original version. As for why he would turn the finale into a movie, he explained that during development, he drew up scenarios for the final season.”[thinking] they would see it as a movie. To have the opportunity for everyone to watch it in the best possible environment, the theater, is a dream come true for me.”

To be fair, compilation movies are nothing new Attack on Titan. There was at least one per season, and later films served as recaps of the seasons they were connected to. In the case of the fourth season, the final two parts were originally released as a pair of specials before being released as individual episodes later. However, it’s kind of funny that MAPPA hasn’t been able to fully break away from this series and move on quite yet. Will this be the studio’s true, final goodbye before committing? Jujutsu Kaisen or other projects? We’ll find out when Attack on Titan The Movie: The Last Attack opens in theaters on November 8 in Japan.

And if this movie doesn’t sound like your cup of tea, Attack on Titan the last chapters will be released DVD and Blu-Ray on November 26.
