Rachel Zegler’s new gory horror film from Hereditary looks insane

The studio behind Hereditary seems to be gearing up for Rachel Zegler’s Y2K horror, which just unveiled its first trailer.

Before Rachel Zegler hits the road to promote her live-action adaptation of Snow White, she’s taking a stab at being a Y2K 2024 scream queen.

The horror flick was produced by A24, the company behind Hereditary and Midsommar, written and directed by SNL alum Kyle Mooney.

Y2K will see Zegler, along with co-stars Jaeden Martell and Julian Dennison, fight for their lives when the technology around them comes alive with the intention of murdering all of humanity.

The film is inspired by the Year 2000 Problem, a supposed glitch that supposedly occurred on January 1, 2000, and caused technology to crash around the world, leaving millions at risk while affecting banks, power plants, and transportation.

As the new millennium approached, many programmers believed that computers would not interpret “00” until 1900, due to an old two-digit code used to indicate the year – so “1970” read as “70”.

This bug was predicted to fatally damage any program that was updated on a daily or yearly basis.

The fear of the world ending due to the Y2K bug was so rampant that the United States government passed the Information Disclosure and Preparedness Act of 2000 in 1998 to encourage companies to share information about their efforts to combat error.

As the world hit the new year, the Y2K bug had almost no effect on any computers and the world continued as normal.

However, A24 and Mooney’s latest project will allow viewers to see what might have happened if Y2K actually happened, albeit in a campier style. The trailer shows Zegler and his friends running from devices like a Tomagotchi using a power drill and an old laptop using a homemade flamethrower.

Y2K hits theaters on December 6, 2024. For more horror, check out our guides to the best horror movies on Amazon Prime Video and horror movies on Disney Plus. You can also check out all the other new movies coming soon.
