Sam Neill has no idea what’s going on in Marvel Thor movies, despite having a cameo

Hollywood movie star Sam Neil is no stranger to blockbusters.

Think Jurassic Park, The Dish and Hunt For the Wilderpeople among many others. He has even sunk his toe into the Marvel Cinema Universe with many cameos in Thor movies.

And while the 74-year-old New Zealand-born actor is a meticulous master of his art, he told news.com.au that he still has no idea what’s going on in Thor – the very films he’s been working on.

Neil starred for the first time in Thor: Ragnarok 2017, before later admitting that the film left him “confused” and the only reason he did so was as a tribute to the film’s director, his colleague Kiwi Taika Waititi.

However, he returned to the unreleased Thor: Love and Thunder franchise, which was shot in Sydney earlier this year.

So does the people of the earth (Asgard) still know?

“No,” he says. “The whole Marvel universe is a complete mystery to me.”

He added: “You have to dedicate weeks of your life to this. It is a dedication of a lifetime.”

Neil’s latest work is in Foxtel’s upcoming original drama, The Twelve, which begins filming in Sydney on Monday.

While Neil is highly regarded for his film work, he has been involved with the small screen all these years, a business that he says has “come a long way” since he started working as an actor.

“When I started working in cinema… Working in television was like getting chlamydia and you stuck with it forever,” he said.

“I think I always had chlamydia because I was never really worried about it. I’ve been mixing TV and movies for a long time. But I think it’s true to say that TV is a very different animal than in the 30s. 40 years ago. years.

“Opportunities on these different platforms now, including Foxtel, to be able to watch things for 10 or 12 hours in a row… That never happened. It’s a completely different world.”

Neil recently returned from where it all began – his rise to international fame – to Steven Spielberg’s classic Jurassic Park in 1993.

He met again with his original co-stars, Laura Dern and Jeff Goldblum, for the third film Jurassic World, Jurassic World: Dominion, starring Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard.

The franchise is a monster, with the first film in 2016 grossing $ 1.6 billion at the global box office.

“It was a great reunion,” Neil said. “We all enjoy each other’s company. When I think of the new cast, Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard, we all just had a great time.

“It’s huge. We had 120 different sets and several hundred dinosaurs. It’s a big production.”
