Sir Ridley Scott? I’m not a fan of superhero movies, it seems. The Alien director has shot both barrels at the ubiquitous spandex genre in a new interview on Deadline.
“They’re fucking boring like shit,” Scott said, apparently without chewing his words. “Their scripts are not good at all. I think I’ve made three great superhero movies in script. One would be Alien with Sigourney Weaver. One would be Gladiator and one would be [Blade Runner],” he continued.
But Ridley is perhaps less keen on what he sees as the current trend of weak stories being held back by special effects – something he also describes as “boring”.
“So why don’t superhero movies have better stories?” Ridley thought. “They are saved mainly by special effects and this becomes boring for all those who work with special effects, if they have the money.”
Away from the superhero arena, Scott has revealed that work is underway on a Gladiator sequel.
“It’s already been written. We have a good footprint, a good, logical place to go. You can’t just make another Gladiator movie … There’s enough evidence from the first one to pick up the ball and move on,” Scott said. The sequel to the 2000 epic starring Russell Crowe has been revealed.
Scott’s latest film, House of Gucci, is set to be released on November 24 in the US and on November 26 in the UK. The legendary director will also take over the Kitbag. Based on the rise of Napoleon Bonaparte to power, Joaquin Phoenix is going to play the French ruler, while Jodi Komer will star alongside Phoenix as Josephine Bonaparte.
