Video game adaptations are in a tears – we have new trailers for Sonic the Hedgehog 2 and Halo live action TV series just last week. And of course, Chris Pratt plays Mario, and one Uncharted the movie is almost here. In the midst of these heavy hits comes the news that Netflix is ready to bring us another franchise: Mega Man, the “blue bomber” of Capcom that goes through retro side cylinders since 1987 in the original NES.
Technically, a Mega Man movie is in the works since 2015 at Chernin Entertainment, and it became a little more formal in 2018 when Capcom officially announced it would be a live-action movie (!) starring Henry Joost and Rel Schulman, perhaps best known for Catfish, attached to writing and directing. Recently, however, that directing duo revealed on the Supermarché website that Netflix took the picture (via Comic book and IGN).
““The features of the works include: an adaptation of Capcom’s MEGA MAN for Chernin Entertainment and Netflix, which they wrote and directed,” the site said.
Unfortunately, there is no indication of how far the film is or when it can be released. (IGN writes that sources say it is too early to grow.) But as some have pointed out, Netflix has a first deal with Chernin; maybe Netflix saw something he liked. Netflix and Supermarché did not immediately comment.
The gold rush to secure copyrighted video game adaptations of Hollywood goes, of course, beyond the movies and shows I’ve mentioned so far, and Netflix has certainly seen the potential thanks to its performance. The Witcher and Castlevania series. Netflix has Resident Evil and Tomb Raider appears in the works, too, and is reportedly under development in live action POKEMON series as well. It generally sees many possibilities in gaming, even in relation to the acquisition by the film studios themselves.
Outside of Netflix, we recently had Monster hunter and Deadly Battle movies, there is one The last of us HBO TV show, maybe a Mass result show for Amazon, a Fallout show that it is definitely for Amazon, plus Ghost of Tsushima and Metal Gear Solid film adaptations. The Gate the movie can be made one day.
We have come a long way since then Uwe Bolli, that’s all I say.
