However, his fears were dispelled on Monday, Eid Day, when the audience went out in hordes to watch his family epic, starring Amitabh Bachchan, Jaya Bachchan, Shah Rukh Khan, Kajol, Hrithik Roshan and Kareena Kapoor Khan. The film ended up doing a Rs record. 55.65 crore. As a result, it was then one of Bollywood’s biggest hits and continues to hold that record.
But if you expected Karan to have a hard time celebrating success, that did not happen. In contrast, in his autobiography “An Unsuitable Boy”, Karan Johar is quoted as saying: “Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham It remains my greatest success, but for me, it was my most depressing moment. “
Karan Johar wrote further, “Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham it was as successful as Gadar. Double the business Lagaan. “But he never had respect at that time.”
To explain his point, he explained how he won almost no awards. He revealed that last year’s actors Waheeda Rehman and Sadhana, who were the rakhi sisters of Yash Johar’s father, were on the Screen Awards jury and did not nominate Karan for Best Director. “My father took it seriously,” Karan confessed in his memoirs.
Karan Johar decided to leave the country and go to London at the Screen Awards. To add to his pain, Lagaan, released a few months before his film, stole the thunder. When he landed in London, he was informed that Lagaan has been nominated for an Oscar and this has further heightened his anxiety. He stated, “Lagaan become the toast of the city. Today no one remembers that Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham came out the same year. “Now, it ‘s on TV every week.”
Meanwhile, his fans said they liked the movie and some even claimed to have seen it ten times. However, Karan focused on the fact that many critics despised the film and that it did not win any awards in the Best Director category.
He later stated in his book, “Everyone in the world knows Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham as the favorite Bollywood movie of this country. It has the highest brand value in Germany, Ireland, France, etc. But that year, it broke me, and I still get over what I went through that year. Somehow, he brought me down to earth. “I collapsed, and maybe that was the best thing because if it hadn’t happened, I might have gone crazy.”
Earlier this year, Bollywood Hungama had spoken with Anil Sharma, its director Gadar – Ek Prem Katha. This actor was a historical blockbuster and was released the same year Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham and Lagaan. At the 47th Filmfare Awards, the film received up to 9 nominations. But Gadar – Ek Prem Katha won only the Best Action category (Tinnu Verma) and the Filmfare Special Performance Award (Ameesha Patel).
In an exclusive conversation with Bollywood HungamaAnil Sharma also made clear his dissatisfaction with the fact that his film was not honored at the awards, “It puts a question mark on the credibility of the awards. But anyway, Gadar – Ek Prem Katha ko toh public ne utha liya θα. “The appreciation from the public was of the utmost importance.”
Kabhi Khushi Kabhie GhamIn the meantime, it received up to 16 nominations at the 47th Filmfare Awards, which was then the record for most nominations a film has ever received. But she won in only five categories – Best Actress (Kajol), Best Actress (Jaya Bachchan), Artistic Direction (Sharmishta Roy), Best Stage and finally Best Dialogue, written by Karan himself.
