Priyanka Chopra, who commented on the role of boxing champion Mary Kom in her latest biographical film released in 2014, has been concerned about her casting. Priyanka said the role should have been played by someone from Northeast India. She revealed that she was reluctant to take on the role but was also greedy as an actress.
The movie of 2014 Mary Com directed by Omung Kumar was based on the life of the Manipur boxing champion who won many laurels for the country, including an Olympic medal and multiple world championships. In a recent interview with Vanity Fair, Priyanka said she was skeptical about taking on the role as Mary Kom was a symbol and made a place for so many athletes and also because she does not look like her. “She is from the northeast of India and I am from the north of India and we did not look like each other physically,” she said.
Looking back, Priyanka admits that the role should have gone to someone from the Northeast, but she did it as she was greedy as an actress to have the opportunity to tell the story of Mary Kom. “When the filmmakers insisted I do it, I said, ‘You know what?’ I will do it “, said Priyanka.
At the time of its release, the film was at the center of a controversy over its casting choice, with some calling the decision to cast Priyanka instead of an actor from the Northeast “racist.”
Priyanka has won numerous awards for her role in the film. Mary Com won the National Award for Best Popular Healthy Entertainment Movie in 2014.
