In May 2020, it was announced that director Doug Liman and actor Tom Cruise were working on a new feature film that would be shot at least partially in space. Updates to the film have been sporadic since then, with reports that it may be hampered by production insurance problems, but last week it was revealed that a full-fledged studio had been set up for ventures like this. Now a new report reveals that this announcement by a space film studio may have been premature and will not even be what Tom Cruise’s feature film uses as a location.
According Variety, Universal Pictures does not yet have a script for the untitled film, but they expect production to begin next year and believe it will be Cruise’s next work after Mission: Impossible 8 folds. The trade goes on to say that in fact most of the film will be shot on Earth and will only be shot “partly on the International Space Station” with some “extra shots … to be shot on a rocket”. Surprisingly, the new film is said to be not a science fiction film, but is described by the post as “an action-adventure film” that follows the actor as “a lucky guy in the position of the only person who could save the Earth.” (this is new to him!).
The upcoming film will be a collaboration between Elon Musk’s Space X and NASA, and production will take place on the International Space Station when they are actually in space. According to a previous report by TMZ, a manifesto 2020 to 2023 lists Cruise and Liman among the passengers on the International Space Station.
“From the first discussions we had about the film … how you secure it was a central part of the conversation,” Lyman said. Accelerator last year. “Well, we would not be talking about this movie if we had not found a way to navigate the insurance element. So we did navigate, but there would have been no discussion about this movie without understanding security… You can not make a movie without doing an insurance conversation [whether] are you talking about space travel, [or] “You’re talking about shootings in London at the heart of the pandemic, you know, insurance will dictate if that ‘s really possible.”
