If you’re a fan of Stephen King, there is plenty to get excited about in 2022. Not only does the literary legend have two books to release, but there are at least three film adaptations expected to be released: Firestarter with Zac Efron, his remake Salems Lotand Netflix Mr. Harrigan’s phone starring Donald Sutherland, Jaden Martell and others. I say “at least” because more and more news about King seems to be popping up every day … like this casting announcement that reveals that Sophie Thatcher and Chris Messina have signed on to star in a short film-based development film Boogeyman.
This is a project that has been under development for a long time, with Quiet place Screenwriters Scott Beck and Bryan Woods were first hired to write the first draft of the screenplay in mid-2018, but now it has some serious momentum ahead. In November last year it was reported that director Rob Savage had signed on to direct the film, which will be an original Hulu, and now Deadline states that the project has begun to develop its cast.
It’s a good idea that Sophie Thatcher will sign on to be part of a Stephen King adaptation right now. The young actor has gained a lot of recognition in recent months as a member of the entire Showtime series Yellow jacket, and King is a prominent member of the series’ growing fan base. The author shared his views via his Twitter account earlier this month, calling it “a hell of a survival story” and “a hell of a good mystery story.”
Boogeyman will be Sophie Thatcher’s first film about Stephen King, but she is not alone in this, as Chris Messina has not yet starred in King’s work. The Birds of Prey The star has been back and forth between the big and small screens in recent years – starring in TV shows including The Mindy Project, Sharp objectsand The sinner – but in 2021 he gave one of my favorite minor performances of the year with his small role in J Blakeson’s dark comedy I care a lot.
Mark Heyman is working on the final draft of the script Boogeymanand at this point it is not clear how close the adaptation will be to Stephen King’s original short story – which is included in the collection Night shift. The non-linear story focuses on a man named Lester Billings who believes that his children have been killed by the eponymous supernatural entity. The trade show does not mention the specific roles that either Sophie Thatcher or Chris Messina will play.
