“Jesus did not come to save the righteous”: Mark Wahlberg discusses God’s redemption, new film “Father Stu”

Actor Mark Wahlberg is more open about his shift to faith in Christ and its impact on his work. In recent years, he has acknowledged that the films he made earlier in his career did not honor God, but he is now working to change that.

Wahlberg says his faith played an integral part in his latest work, a new film called Father Stu.

Reading the script of the film, Wahlberg, a devout Catholic, said he pondered his own past, present and purpose in life.

“God continued to bless me and bring me into this situation,” he said Fox NewsRaymond Arroyo. “Not to keep growing and working on Mark Wahlberg, but to do His job and eventually give me the skills and tools to get out there and articulate the message he wants to articulate.”

The biographical film is based on the life story of a boxer who became a priest, Father Stuart Long.

During the interview with Fox, Wahlberg referred to a scene in the film when Father Stu visits a prison and challenges inmates to change their lives for the better.

“Stu sees himself in all these prisoners … this could easily have been his life. He has been on this track for quite some time,” Wahlberg said. “Basically he says that with all that is happening, God is not going to leave you, and do not dare to abandon yourself. It causes them to change their lives. It is never too late. You breathe, you have the opportunity to be redeemed.”

He added, “Jesus did not come to save the righteous, he came to save the sinners. “We are all weak.”

The actor remembered how people are judged harshly after making a wrong move or a mistake … a circumstance he knows.

“Personally for me, I know I have made many mistakes in my life, but I have concentrated since I was 16, 17… to change my life and this is a daily job that I have to keep working on. on. We all have our moments. “It’s not my place to judge and I know that all I do is hope … I hope, when it’s my day to be judged, to take a pass and go.”

Wahlberg noted that the release of Father Stu was timely because people need a film that promotes faith.

“People need to have faith and hope,” he said. “Young men need to know what it’s like to be a real man. You could literally list a million reasons … just turn on the news, wherever you look there are reasons to encourage people to have faith and hope.”

And he continued, “I did not know we were going to release this movie in a pandemic. I just knew I had to make this movie and that was my call – that was my mission. And now, it takes more than ever, and I hope it will help many people “.

Asked if making the film was a turning point in his career, Wahlberg replied: “It’s definitely a turning point for me in my life.”

Father Stu premieres in theaters on Good Friday, April 15th.
