Winter could have ended for Nikolaj Coster-Waldau when Game of Thrones ended in 2019, but the Danish star put himself back in the snow for his last adventure, Against the ice.
The film, now available on Netflix, follows the wild epic of Dane Ejnar Mikkelsen, a captain, explorer and writer who began in 1909 retrieving maps and magazines of a failed Artic mission a few years ago. The Associated Press.
At stake was a dispute over northeastern Greenland, which had been claimed by the United States and which the Dutch were trying to cancel by proving that Greenland was an island.
Mikkelsen only had the sled dogs and an inexperienced companion by his side for the mission, which became increasingly complicated.
It’s been a project with Coster-Waldau for almost a decade. Director Peter Flinth, a friend from school, sent Mikkelsen Two’s book Against the ice to examine.
Flinth had heard about it from Queen Margrethe II of Denmark who had told Flinth he could make a good film. Coster-Waldau agreed and not only starred: He also wrote the screenplay with his longtime friend and collaborator Joe Derrick.
“It was a long journey. “It was a complicated book to adapt,” Coster-Waldau, 51, said in a recent interview.
“I have always loved survival stories, explorers who go to unknown places. It is exciting. “But what really caught me here was that it was an unusual combination,” he said.
Coster-Waldau added: “Normally both men would have the same ambitions and hopes, but here one of them was a famous explorer and the other was literally just an engineer. That is what really saves them, that they were so different. “
Game of Thrones got a lot of air in the culture when it was in operation, but Coster-Waldau always knew there was life outside of Jaime Lannister.
It was on a trip that he discovered he had lost the lead role in John Carter who discovered he had booked a dragon pilot. Although it may not have looked that way at the time, it turned out to be the best case scenario.
Game of Thrones provided stability and fame and made him famous in the US, but even during the eight seasons, he always did other projects.
“I love acting. “I like finding jobs as an actor,” he said. “But what we do now is so much fun and so interesting, just to get from the beginning of a story and help create it.”
