A little-known fact about Supreme Court Justice Judge L. Nageswara Rao was revealed today during his farewell service. Justice Rao, the fifth Supreme Court Justice, once starred in a Bollywood film.
At his farewell event hosted by the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA), senior lawyer Pradeep Kumar Rai shared the event for Judge L Nageswara Rao.
In the 1989 film “Kanoon Apna Apna”, Justice Rao starred as a police officer alongside Sanjay Dutt and Kader Khan.
Mr Rai also revealed that Justice Rao represented Andhra Pradesh at the Ranji Trophy cricket tournament. The Chief Justice of India has said that CJI XI defeated SCBA XI in a cricket match this year under the leadership of Justice Rao.
Speaking about his brief invasion of Bollywood, Justice Rao said, “I was in the theater when I was in college. My cousin was a director and so he had a small role in a movie. That was it.”
“I did not want to be an actor. Lawyers act in court and so do judges,” he added.
He said that cricket is his passion and even when he works, he turns on the TV to watch IPL matches.
Justice Rao was appointed Supreme Court Justice on May 13, 2016. He is the seventh in the history of the Supreme Court to be promoted directly from the Bar.
As usual, Judge Rao today sat in the chair with the Prime Minister on his last working day as a judge of the Supreme Court.
India’s Supreme Judge NV Ramana has said that Justice Rao’s retirement is a huge loss for Bench and that his strong analytical skills and passion for justice will be lacking.
Justice Rao, originally from Chirala in the Prakasam district of Andhra Pradesh, practiced law at Nagarjuna University in Guntur and enrolled as a lawyer in 1982 in the Andhra Pradesh Bar Association.
After practicing law at the Guntur District Court for two years, he was transferred to the Andhra Pradesh Supreme Court and remained there until December 1994.
From January 1995 to May 2016 he practiced law in the Supreme Court and became a senior lawyer and then an Additional Attorney General.
He was appointed a judge of the Supreme Court on May 13, 2016.
