Gibsonton is the site for a new feature film

by Stewart Cole

Gibsonton does not forget the unusual people of the old days.

“Most of the people you see behind me lived here or lived here. They used to be this city,” said Doc Rivera, who runs the Schuman Museum, which has been full of carnival art for a long time.

Side characters like Bearded Lady and Wolf Boy inspired a new horror movie called The monster is coming at midnight. Its producer, Ed McKeever, of Showtown American Pictures, described it as a fun creature with modern features.

“People will be in danger. There is a werewolf in the freeway running frantically around this area,” McKeever said. The producer said it is a family movie that will cause shock and laughter.

With a budget of less than $ 250,000, the film goes back to the 1950s, when the Gibsonton Carnivalists were on the main highway.

“These poor people heading for Highway 41 to Miami must have thought they were in the twilight zone,” Rivera said.

Directors were still finding many strange places to send their actors, such as a swamp near Weeki Wachee where parts of classic horror, Creature from the Black Lagoon was filmed.

“We made our actors go to the hole and caught a really great scene. A fisherman is killed, but you have to watch the movie to see it,” said Todd Olifer, executive producer of Showtown American Pictures.

Monster coming at midnight is the first of a series of films inspired by Gibsonton’s bizarre story.

“Who does not love a good horror?” said McKiver. “So if you combine good horror with good entertainment, I think everyone will love it.”

The Beast will have a free first-run screening this Saturday, June 11, at the Tampa Theater at 1 p.m.

It’s an old school for an old school movie that could scare you, make you laugh or maybe both.
