At the 2022 D23 Expo, Disney revealed the details of several highly anticipated projects, while also announcing some new projects for the next two years. Disney is arguably the most successful movie studio in the world, considering the kind of success that Marvel movies and shows have been bringing in the past few years.
While many announcements about Marvel shows and movies have been expected, fans have been eagerly awaiting details about the animated films from Walt Disney Pictures and Pixar. 1) Helio
Helio is a Walt Disney Pictures and Pixar production that looks to bring back the tradition of telling larger-than-life stories in dreamy ways. The film is set to hit theaters on March 1, 2024, and was one of the biggest projects announced at the D23 Expo.
Adrian Molina, who previously directed Cocoa and contributed to its script the good dinosaur will direct Helio. Since its release Soul in 2020 from the same production houses, the expectations for the upcoming animated films were quite high.
Helio follows the life of a shy, introverted 11-year-old whose mother is involved in a space-related military mission. When he accidentally comes into contact with another galaxy, he is mistaken for Earth’s intergalactic ambassador. The film is completely computer-animated and may bring back the signature “Disney tradition” of discussing complex philosophies through simple stories.
2) Snow White
The trend of remaking classic cartoons into live action started many years ago and is still quite popular with the recent release of the Tom Hanks starrer Pinocchio. Another film announced at the D23 Expo was the live-action remake of Snow White, one of Disney’s oldest animated films.
Although live-action remakes haven’t received as much love as the originals, remakes of previous films such as The Jungle Book and Beauty and the Beastopened up space for great cinematic experiences in the theater.
The live-action version of it Snow White will hit theaters on March 22, 2024 and will star Rachel Zegler, who previously played Ariel in Little Mermaid and Princess Fiona inside Shrek the Musical. The film also stars Gal Gadot as the evil stepmother and has a script co-written by Greta Gerwig.
3) Inside Out 2
Inside out is one of the best animated films ever made. The sensitivity and care with which the film talks about the human psyche and emotional health while telling an optimistic children’s story is remarkable. They were widely watched and loved by children and adults alike.
The announcement of its continuation Inside out is one of the most exciting news from the D23 Expo. It is one of Disney’s highest-grossing films and the sequel is expected to do even better at the box-office.
Inside Out 2 will hit theaters on June 14, 2024, and will take place inside the head of a now-aged Riley who begins to experience younger emotions.
4) Mufasa: The Lion King
While the 1994 animated film king of lions is one of Disney’s most beloved films, the 2019 live-action remake didn’t quite impress audiences. The film was heavily criticized for the lack of additional nuances in the live-action version. However, the studio has now announced Mufasa: The Lion Kinga prequel to the 2019 remake, which is expected to delve deeper into Mufasa’s history and origins.
While many fans thought of Scar as a better subject for the prequel, Mufasa, as one of Disney’s most beloved characters, generated just as much excitement.
