The unusual but highly commercial thriller, Kaante, turned 20 on December 20. The film was a huge success commercially and even critically, earning critical acclaim. During an exclusive interaction with Bollywood Hungama about KaanteOn its 20th anniversary, Sanjay Gupta spoke about a particularly negative review for his film, written by Tanuj Garg.

said Sanjay Gupta Bollywood Hungama, “Most reviewers gave good reviews. But there was one critic, Tanuj Garg, who wrote for the Afternoon newspaper. He gave my movie half a star and his last line was “I’m giving this movie half a star because it’s Christmas and I’m in the festive mood.” What he meant was that if he wasn’t in a festive mood, he wouldn’t have given the film even half a star!’
Sanjay Gupta continued: “There is a picture of George Lucas on the sets of the second or third Star Wars. He wears a T-Shirt with the last four lines of a negative review on it Star WarsThe first part of the LA Times is reported. They had torn the tape. Their angst was that the film had lousy acting, a bad story, and that it was a complete waste of time. The way George Lucas made a t-shirt out of it, I’ll do the same. “I’m in a festive mood – Tanuj Garg” will be mentioned on my T-Shirt. Yes Short-sleeved blouse Mr banunga hi banunga! On the back of the blouse, I will report KaanteThe glowing review of Sight N Sound, the world’s most literary film magazine. They had written “This film goes far beyond Reservoir Dogs‘. Moreover, they compared me with my gurus like Tony Scott and Ridley Scott and said, in terms of looks, my film is at par with those filmmakers’ films. And mind you, their movies even then made $80-90 million. My movie wasn’t even made for $3 million!”

Tanuj Garg is currently an established producer and co-founder of Ellipsis Entertainment along with Atul Kasbekar. They have made movies like Neerja (2016), Tumhari Sulu (2017), Why would I cheat? India (2019) and Loop Lapeta (2022).
