Abhay Deol, who is known to speak his mind on many issues, has spoken about the ongoing controversies surrounding the Shah Rukh Khan starrer Pathan. For the uninitiated, the film has become the target of many outfits due to the saffron swimsuit worn by Deepika Padukone in “Besharam Rang” song. It created an uproar and the CBFC has deleted certain lyrics and scenes from the song as well.

I’m referring to Pathan, Abhay Deol told India Today, “It’s not unthinkable. If you look at the world today, it is polarized. If you want to make an issue of something, you can do it easily. Possible. Many have done so in the past and will continue to do so.”

“We live in a polarized world. I think social media and technology has made information so fast, and it’s also misinformation on so many levels. There is this tendency to boil things down to a title. There is inconsistency everywhere, whether it is the media or people who consume that media. It’s a volatile space, and that’s an interesting topic, but do I believe in bans and cancel culture? It’s more nuanced than that. I think the ban doesn’t necessarily make it go away. This (issue) goes underground,” he said.

On the work front, Abhay Deol will star in the Netflix project Trial by fire. Based on the best-seller, “Trial by Fire: The Tragic Tale of the Uphaar Fire Tragedy” written by Neelam and Shekhar Krishnamoorthy, the series will air from 13 January 2022. Directed by Prashant Nair and produced by Endemol Shine India and House of Talkies , the human drama stars Rajshri Deshpande, Abhay Deol, Rajesh Tailang, Ashish Vidyarthi, Anupam Kher, Ratna Pathak, Shilpa Shukla and Shardul Bharadwaj.

Pathan is set to hit theaters on January 25, 2023.
