The new Star Wars movie is inspired by the best scene of the prequels

by Stewart Cole

After what seemed like an interminable wait, we finally know some of them new Star Wars movies that will make their way to theaters in the next decade or so. These Star Wars movies have the task of banishing the memory of The Rise of Skywalker, which frankly isn’t anyone’s favorite trip to the galaxy far, far away.

One of the new movies is set to be written and directed by Dave Filoni, who was responsible for some of the best animated series ever with The Clone Wars and Star Wars Rebels. Since then he has been the driving force behind Star Wars series on Disney Plus, including The Mandalorian.

Filoni’s film will bring together the threads of the “Mandoverse,” which we’ll learn more about after Ahsoka’s release date this summer. And when it comes to inspiration, Filoni looks to the Star Wars prequels.

Talking to you Rotten tomatoes, Filoni said that a particular moment from the 2005 film Revenge of the Sith informed his thinking about what his film should be. “There’s a wealth of things to draw from, not just in our own order, but in the larger galaxy,” Filoni said.

He added: “When I saw the opening of Revenge of the Sith and the starfighters came over the bow of the ship and revealed this massive battle, I was like, ‘This is it. This is the movie I want to see here.”

The scene Filoni is referring to takes place right at the beginning of the film and features some of the best Star Wars characters, including Obi-Wan Kenobi and Anakin Skywalker, leading a dogfight in space over Coruscant in an attempt to save the Chancellor Palpatine.

It’s an exciting start to what many consider to be the best film of the prequel era. And let’s face it, that’s not a particularly high bar.

Filoni has always spoken fondly of the prequels, and it’s interesting that he looks to one of the best Star Wars scenes from that era as a key inspiration for his own big screen directorial debut.
