A remake of last year’s scary Danish horror film, James Watkins (The Woman in Black, Eden Lake) directs Don’t speak evil for Blumhouse and Universal, and Deadline provides an update this afternoon. Mackenzie Davis (Terminator: Dark Fate, Happiest Season) will star alongside the previously announced James McAvoy (Split, Glass).
What’s the point of remaking a movie that just came out last year? It is a difficult question to answer. But with Davis and McAvoy leading the cast, this is a good start.
Universal will release Don’t speak evil in theaters on August 9, 2024.
Deadline recalls, “In the original 2022 film, a Danish family visits a Dutch family they met on holiday. What was supposed to be an idyllic weekend slowly begins to unravel as the Danes try to remain polite in the face of the unpleasant situation.’
James Watkins also wrote the screenplay for the Don’t speak evil remake.
Jason Blum will produce the upcoming film for Blumhouse, with Paul Ritchie, Christian Tafdrup, Jacob Jarek and Bea Sequeira serving as Executive Producers.
Directed by: Christian Tafdrup, the original Don’t speak evil was chosen as one of Bloody Disgusting’s 12 Best International Horror Films of 2022. Daniel Kurland enthused about the extremely harrowing Danish nightmare, “This claustrophobic character study strangely examines the nature of evil and the chilling realization that it doesn’t always have to be reason for malice. Don’t speak evil feels like the twisted Danish cousin to Barbarian and every tense moment of silence feels like it might develop into an entirely different type of horror.”
