Anurag Kashyap has spoken about how problematic the past few years have been for him. This period also saw the closure of the production house Phantom Studios, in which he was one of the partners. He also said that during this time he directed a few films written by others because he didn’t want to repeat himself.
Speaking to Variety, Kashyap said, “I’ve loved everything I’ve done. For me personally, I won’t do what I don’t want to do. But sometimes in between, then Psycho Raman (Raman Raghav 2.0) there came a phase where this whole Phantom fiasco that happened, the lockdown that happened, a lot of things were happening.”
In this phase he made films like Manmarziyan and Damn it. He added that his latest film Almost Pyaar with DJ Mohabbat it was the only film designed by him. Starring Alaya F and Karan Mehta, the film had released earlier this year.
“I worked a lot on other people’s scripts,” said the director. “I wrote a lot of other people’s scripts and only one I wrote was Almost Pyaar with DJ Mohabbat, which was an idea that came out of nowhere and I wanted to explore it because I was tired of people always expecting me to come back and make another gangster film. If you don’t have something new and exciting going on why should I?’
Kashyap’s upcoming film Kennedy it also brings him back to his roots. With an unusual cast of Rahul Bhat and Sunny Leone, he has described the film as “a dark, nightmarish, character-driven thriller about redemption”. The film has been selected to premiere at this year’s Cannes Film Festival.
