“When you wish on a star . . .” It is one of the most famous lines in the Disney canon, originating from the 1940 film “Pinocchio.” It’s also part of the inspiration for Disney’s new animated musical “Wish,” coming out this fall. Disney first announced the project at the D23 Expo in September 2022, for which POPSUGAR was on hand. It stars Academy Award winner Ariana DeBose as Asha, an optimist who lives in the magical kingdom of Rosas.
“Wish” follows Asha as she tries to save her kingdom by making – of course – a wish. According to Disney, Asha’s plea is literally answered by a little cosmic ball of energy called Star. The pair will work together to try and save the day. The new film features original songs by Julia Michaels, Benjamin Rice and composer Dave Metzger and is directed by Chris Buck and Fawn Veerasunthorn.
On April 26, Disney announced a new cast member for the animated film: Chris Pine, who will voice a character named King Magnifico. Executive producer and writer Jennifer Lee said of Pine’s casting in a statement: “As the most powerful person in the kingdom, King Magnifico had to be played by someone who could bring all the charm, intelligence and charisma to him. the magnanimous character, and Chris is beautifully bringing all of that and then some.”
Actor Alan Tudyk — a Disney favorite who has lent his talents to “Frozen,” “Disenchanted” and more — also voices a pajama-wearing goat named Valentino.
Disney said that “Wish” and its focus on the wishing star, a feature of so many Disney films, is meant to honor Disney’s 100th anniversary, which the company celebrates this year. Ahead, here’s what we know about “Wish” so far.
