KOCHI: The producers of ‘The story of Kerala,” a film scheduled for release on May 5, changed its YouTube trailer on Tuesday after it sparked controversy over its earlier release’s claim that 32,000 women had left the state to join the IS terror group.
According to the latest trailer, shared on Sunshine Pictures’ official YouTube page, the film is “a collection of true stories of three young girls from different parts of Kerala… Thousands of innocent women have been systematically converted, radicalized and lives destroyed…”
The first teaser of the film, which was released last November, claimed to feature “heartbreaking and harrowing stories of 32,000 women in Kerala!”
The makers of ‘The Kerala Story’ changed the trailer of the film on YouTube on Tuesday, following a controversy.
The film’s claim that 32,000 women from Kerala had joined IS quickly sparked a firestorm, led by the CPM LDF and the opposition UDF seeking a ban on its screening. The fire spread quickly as the Muslim League wing of the Indian Muslim League announced a reward of Rs 1 crore to anyone who could show evidence that 32,000 girls were Islamic state members.
Hindu seva kendra founder Pratheesh Viswanath responded by offering 10 crore to prove that no one from Kerala has gone Syria to join IS. MYL general secretary PK Firoz said on Tuesday that the filmmakers changed the trailer due to opposition from Kerala against the sangh parivar’s propaganda.
Lawyer and actor C Shukkur wrote on Facebook that he would pay Rs 11 lakh to anyone who can name at least 32 women from Kerala who converted and then joined IS.
Blogger K Nazeer Hussain said he would “give Rs 10 lakh to anyone who can prove that women were converted and forced to join the Islamic State”.
Earlier in the day, CPM state minister MV Govindan alleged that the film was an attempt by BJP and RSS to poison people’s minds. Producer Vipul Amrutlal Shah dismissed claims that the film is sponsored by the BJP, saying they “have no connection with any political party” and anything said about the film without watching it is “speculation”.
