The Evil Dead Movies have been a long time in the cultural mindset. Starting in 1981 with The Evil Dead and spans two subsequent sequels there, a TV series, two young films in a different world and beyond, the story created by Sam Raimi has staying power. And part of the reason the show keeps working is because it adapts to the story being told. For example, when it first came out, it was a horror movie.
But through Raimi’s mastery and Bruce Campbell’s brilliance in playing Ash, we watched as the film evolved into its own style of horror and camp that has become synonymous with the name. Both new films continue in that tradition, even though neither Raimi nor Campbell have been involved beyond their production roles. But one thing was clear to me after watching 2023 Evil Dead Rise: It’s time for the survivors of the Deadites to all come in together. Including ash.
I liked both of Fede Álvarez Evil Dead as well as by Lee Cronin Evil Dead Rise, and the characters we are introduced to. I liked that there were female characters that contradicted the Book of the Dead because, in most of the original Evil Dead franchise, it was just Ash fighting and losing the women closest to him. But, it also makes sense Unnecessary that Ash somehow hasn’t figured out what’s going on, especially with the book being wild and free in Los Angeles.
And so after his success Evil Dead Rise, I have some thoughts on the future of this franchise and where we can go. Especially with more inclusion of Raimi’s franchise and Ash teaming up with some of the new characters we’ve come to love from the latest installments.
It’s time
Mia (Jane Levy) fought off possession by the Dead and may have lived to tell the tale. We don’t know where he went. With Evil Dead Rise, we watched as Beth (Lily Sullivan) and Kassie (Nell Fisher) finally escaped the doomed apartment building that claimed the lives of Kassie’s mother and siblings. But, we also saw that the Deadites followed another young woman back to a cabin with her cousin and boyfriend and what happened there (teased at the beginning of the movie). All this is widespread for the dead. And it’s something I honestly think Ash would know.
Granted, it’s not always one of them I want to jump back into that race, as we’ve seen with things like Ash Vs. Evil Dead, but I’m surprised it didn’t reappear. But, that might just be because I really love Bruce Campbell and Ash (always will, always will). I just think that while Evil Dead it was straight horror (like the original) and Evil Dead Rise it was a bit more fun mixed with horror, I hope whatever third movie we make has the atmosphere Army of Darkness.
And I wouldn’t be crazy if that also includes Ash’s big return to Evil Dead films with Kassie, Beth, and maybe even Mia all on his team to try and stop the Book of the Dead once again.
