In a shocking turn of events, director Om Raut and writer Manoj Muntashir received life threats from the Kshatriya Karni Sena. These threats come amid an ongoing controversy surrounding the dialogues of the recently released film in India Adipurush. Meanwhile, the Lucknow bench of the Allahabad High Court strongly criticized both the censors and the makers of the film.
The criticism of the Allahabad High Court came during a hearing on a plea filed against some controversial dialogues presented in Adipurush. “The nature of dialogue in the film is a big issue. Ramayana is an example for us. People used to read Ramcharitmanas before leaving home,” the court said.
The bench further added, “Agar hum log ispar bhi aankh band kar len kyonki yeh kaha jaata hai ki yeh dharm ke log bade sahishnu (tolerant) hain to kya uska test liya jayega? (If we turn a blind eye to this issue as well, because people of this religion are said to be very tolerant, will this also be tested?).
The court said, “It is good that people do not harm the law and order situation after watching the film. Lord Hanuman and Sita have been shown as nothing. These things should have been removed from the beginning. Some scenes appear to be rated ‘A’ (adult). It’s very difficult to watch such films.”
While terming it a “very serious matter”, the Allahabad High Court questioned the Board of Film Censors (CBFC). During a hearing, the deputy attorney general informed the court that the disputed dialogues had been removed. In response, the court asked the Deputy DG about the CBFC’s actions and effectiveness in overseeing such matters.
The court argued, “That alone will not work. What will you do with the scenes? Ask for instructions, then we will certainly do what we want to do… In case the exhibition of the film is stopped, then the people whose feelings have been hurt will be relieved.”
The court was critical of the defendants’ argument about adding a disclaimer to the film. The bench questioned whether those responsible for the disclaimer believed that the people and youth of the country lacked intelligence.
“We saw on the news that people went to theaters and shut down the movie. Be thankful no one vandalized it,” the court concluded. The court also directed co-screenwriter Manoj Muntashir Shukla to become a party in the case and issued a notice asking him to respond within a week. The hearing will continue tomorrow.
