Earlier today, it was announced that Phoebe Waller-Bridge is writing a new live action Tomb Raider series for Amazon Prime Video. However, this is only the beginning of Amazon’s big ambitions for the franchise. According Deadlineof Amazon Tomb Raider Plans include a movie and a new game that will tie into the upcoming series. Essentially, Amazon wants to build it into a Marvel-style franchise.
Waller-Bridge is reportedly helming both the film and the TV series. But Deadline isn’t specifically stating that it will write both. Waller-Bridge has extensive experience as both a writer and creator Fleabag and Killing Eveand co-writer on There is no time to die. She is also slated to co-star Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny this June.
On the big screen, Lara Croft has only been played by two live-action actresses: Angelina Jolie and Alicia Vikander. In 2018 Tomb Raider The film starring Vikander was based on the 2013 reboot of the video game with a much younger Lara in the lead. However, the film underperformed at the box office and a planned sequel never materialized.
MGM lost it Tomb Raider rights last year, but Amazon has reassembled them for this new shared universe. The only rights not included in this package are for animations. Netflix already has a two season order for one Tomb Raider anime series. But this project currently has no release date.
