Angelina JolieHis latest film is set for a Netflix released after its premiere at the Venice Film Festival.
Marya biopic starring Jolie in the title role of Maria Callas, will be released in Netflix in the USA “at a later date” after debuting at the festival today (August 29). A UK release date has not been confirmed.
Director Pablo Larraín, who also created the movie Princess Diana Spencer and the biography of Jacqueline Kennedy Fireplacesaid he was excited to work with the streamer for the release.
“I’m thrilled to be working again with the team at Netflix who care so passionately about movies. This film is my most personal work to date,” he said in a statement.

“It is a creative and psychological portrait of Maria Callas, who, after devoting her life to performing for audiences around the world, finally decides to find her own voice, her own identity and sing for herself. It is a great honor to tell this story and share it with audiences around the world, as Maria did with her life.”
The cast also includes The Hummingbird’s Pierfrancesco Favino, La Chimera starring Alba Rohrwacher, Winter Sleep actor Haluk Bilginer, ElvisKodi Smit-McPhee and Portrait of a Lady on Fire star Valeria Golino.
The script was written by Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight, with Juan de Dios Larraín, Jonas Dornbach and Lorenzo Mieli producing.
The film’s synopsis reads: “Maria tells the turbulent, beautiful and tragic life story of the world’s greatest opera singer, relived and reimagined in her final days in 1970s Paris.”

THE director’s statement for the Venice Film Festival added: “Maria Callas, the greatest opera singer of all time, undoubtedly had a unique, beautiful and tortured life. This is the story of her last days, a celebration depicted through memories, friends and, most The important thing is her song.’
Speaking at the Venice Film Festival conference (c Variety), Salt star Jolie shared that she spent “almost seven months” singing opera for the role, saying, “Everyone here knows, I was terribly nervous.
“I went through almost seven months of training because when you work with Pablo you can’t do anything by halves. It requires, in the most wonderful way, that you really do the work and really learn and train.
“My first time singing I remember being so nervous. My sons were there and they helped me lock the door so no one else could come in and I was shaking. Pablo, with all his dignity, led me into a small room and It finished me inside. So, Skala gave me time to grow.”
Maria premieres at the Venice Film Festival on August 29. It’s set to come to Netflix US “at a later date.” A UK release date has not been confirmed.
