A trilogy of new Avatar movies: The Last Airbender has been announced – with original co-creators Bryan Konietzko and Michael DiMartino taking on production.
As revealed at the Annecy International Animation Festival (via Variety (opens in new tab)), Lauren Montgomery – who worked on the original Nickelodeon series, which ran from 2005 to 2008 – will direct the first of three new Avatar films.
“As original creators Mike and Bryan expand the Avatar universe with us, we keep it all in the family with Lauren bringing the same special, beautiful work she did in the original series to her new directing role in the upcoming play. said Paramount Animation and Nickelodeon Animation president Ramsey Naito.
This will fall under the banner of Avatar Studios – a studio created in 2021, which, according to Konietzko and DiMartino at the time, is “an unparalleled opportunity to develop our franchise and its narrative on a huge scale, with myriad of fascinating ways and means “.
This collaboration, it seems, is beginning to bear fruit. There is no release date – or even a title – for the first animated film Avatar: The Last Airbender, but it is exciting news for those looking for more adventure from the universe that brought us Aang, Korra and Fire Nation.
Netflix, meanwhile, is producing its own live series Avatar: The Last Airbender. The cast has been named, including Lost’s Daniel Dae Kim as Fire Lord Azai. Konietzko and DiMartino left the project in 2020, with Konietzko citing a “negative and non-supportive environment”.
