In a recent interview with the AP, Sam said, “I was really trying to make a Marvel movie, first and foremost. I guess everyone does things their own way, without specifically trying to do something different from what they were. I was really just trying to follow the characters from the previous Marvel movies and the Wandavision stories that had led and where all the Avengers movies had led. But also try to open the multiverse, as Marvel had asked author Michael Waldron for future adventures.

The first reactions to Doctor Strange 2 described it as a “horror movie”. Collider’s Perri Nemiroff wrote: “MARVEL FOR THE HORROR MOVIE! It is strange, scary and wins the title of Multiverse of Madness. If this movie bothered you at all, Sam Raimi would not feel good enough, do not be afraid! I can not imagine more Sam Raimi MCU movie. “My heart that loves the genre is bursting right now.”

Fandango’s Eric Davis wrote: “By far the most creepy, gloomy, haunting and terrifying Marvel movie, #MultiverseOfMadness definitely brings out the vibrations of Sam Raimi and I loved it. Danny Elfman’s music fits perfectly with the film’s strange, mysterious tone and Elizabeth Olsen is MVP, imo.
