Brendan Fraser has responded to criticism of his role as a 600-pound man in The Whale.

There are many people who have already seen the first screenings of Brendan Fraser The whale and now they’re upset that a plus-sized actor wasn’t chosen for the lead role, and instead, Fraser used what’s known as a “fat suit” to portray a 600-pound man. Fraser has answered this review stating “I’m not a small man and I don’t know what the measurement is to be eligible to play the role. I only know that I had to give as honestly as I can.”
Darren Aronofsky, its director The whale, also responded to heavy-handed critics of his new film, stating, “There’s no way you’re going to cast someone to play that job, so we had to use makeup to get there.” That’s certainly true, and we wouldn’t have thought that finding a 600-pound person would be possible to find, so we can assume that Brendan Fraser plays this role to the best of his ability without trying to be disrespectful in any way.
As soon as people see Brendan Fraser inside The whale, their tune could change, something Aronofsky has expressed as well. He expressed that many of the people criticizing the film haven’t even seen it and he invited them to watch the film before making hasty judgments about the representation or lack thereof. The whale was screened at the Venice Film Festival, which took place in August, and saw Fraser and the rest of the cast and crew receive a standing ovation for the six-minute film.
Honestly, we can’t wait to see this movie when it comes out on December 9th, and with A24 producing the movie, we’d imagine the movie’s story is going to be quite the journey. Brendan Fraser has also said he hopes so The whale it’s a film that can actually bring about a change in society about how taller people are treated, something that great art can achieve. At least the man understands the critics and why people are upset, but also welcomes those people to watch the art that has been delivered.
Brendan Fraser is returning to acting and has already been praised for his performance The whale, leaving many to state that it could be in contention for an Oscar nomination. The man has always been respectful and polite in his interviews and in life, and has opened up to the world about the struggles that led him to walk away from his career. Now that he’s back, hopefully the art he’s doing can be given the fair chance it deserves.
The whale will officially open on December 9th, and from early screenings and word of mouth, the film could be the one that earns Brendan Fraser his first Oscar nomination. While it may have been difficult to find a 600-pound man to play in this movie, we’d imagine Fraser approached the role with the utmost respect. Representation certainly matters in this world, but sometimes that representation can be impossible to achieve and we should welcome art for what it is.
