Cynthia Erivo shared some new ideas for the upcoming big screen adaptation of the wildly popular Broadway musical Wicked. Speaking while promoting Luther: The Fallen Sun, the actor shared how the film will be different from the show, as well as teasing the possibility of new music.
“I don’t know that you can compare them,” Erivo said Accelerator (opens in new tab) about the comparison. “It’s like apples and oranges. The show is its own thing. The show is its own legend. I think this movie lives up to the show and the book. Also, we get to create something really new and slightly different from what you’re going to be used to seeing. We’re lucky in that we have the space to really fill the world and really fill these characters. You’re going to be able to get into the psyche of these women. You’re going to get to know You’re going to live with them a lot more, and you’re going to live with them a lot longer. I think it’s really special that we can reintroduce these two women, in a slightly different way.”
Erivo will play Elphaba, the Wicked Witch of the West, in the musical film directed by Jon M. Chu. Opposite her, as Glinda the Good Witch, is Ariana Grande, while Bridgerton’s Jonathan Bailey will be Prince Fiyero. The extended cast includes Jeff Goldblum, Michelle Yeoh, Ethan Slater, Bowen Yang and Aaron.
Along with some of the memorable songs, Erivo also teased the possibilities for new music. Asked by Collider, she replied: “I can’t tell you that. I can’t tell you that. But I think you’ll be pleasantly surprised.”
The film will also be split into two parts, with the first coming on Christmas Day 2024. For more on other upcoming films, here are all the 2023 film release dates you need to know.
