Aditya Roy Kapur starrer Gumrah hit the theaters a few days ago, however, the film turned out to be quite a disaster. Despite being a remake of a hit film, the film failed to set the box office on fire. Actor Deepak Kalra, who plays an integral role in the film, is unfazed by her fate. “The film did wonders for me. I got to be on The Kapil Sharma Show because of this film. All the judges say good things about my performance. Everyone who has seen the film has loved it,” shares Kalra.

So he wasn’t influenced by the movie that doesn’t make money? He quickly replies: “Bilkul nahi. Main thodi to play lagaye hai. I am an actor and my job is to give a good performance which I did. People are still watching the movie, it is soon going to be broadcast on an OTT giant. I am sure that once it is released on the digital platform, it will get its due. Also, I also have a brother in Aditya through this film. So I’m happy.”
The Delhi lad says he is living the ‘Bollywood dream’ in Mumbai. While he has shared the screen alongside greats like Shah Rukh Khan (in Fan), he started his career as a junior artist in Imtiyaz Ali’s Rockstar.

“I started my career as a junior artist in the movie Rockstar. i got paid ₹750 for this concert. Even my mother was on stage. All I wanted was to make it to the big screen. When a coordinator called me on the set of Rockstar, my mother and I were as happy as if I had been offered the lead role. I still remember the day of the shoot when I told Imtiyaz Ali that, ‘Main bhi ek rockstar hoon,’” recalls Kalra.
After that the real struggle of Kalra to bag works began. “Bohot rejects scorch it. Back then people would just look at you and say you fit in or you don’t. I was happy, even if I was shortlisted. Main bahut roya hoon zindagi mein. I cried whenever I didn’t get a job and it happened quite often. I would be shortlisted for six projects in one day and none would work,” laments the 28-year-old.

While he may have been turned down for many projects, the Guilty Minds actor shares that most of the projects that got him fired, never saw the light of day. “I did a film that was from a big banner and was supposed to be shot in the US. I had invested 1.5 years in that film, however, one fine day mujhe pata chalta ki mujhe nikaal diya uss film se. Without any reason. Master of Hafta Roya. There was another film which was under Karan Johar’s banner. And even that film was shelved. Now I feel agar mujhe nahi loge, toh film hi band ho jaayegi,” he quips.
He’s glad success didn’t knock on his door early in his career. “If the main star ban jaata toh shayad was rude, arrogant and within two years I would have packed my bags and gone back to my family business,” he says.
