Filmmaker Abhiroop Basu, who writes and directs short films, criticized it Kantara during an interview with ETimes. He is quoted as saying, “I feel like it’s a mockery of anybody’s intelligence. Badly made, regressive, loud, full of tropes, no real characters to root for, the so called plot twists seem disingenuous and just serve as gimmicks, the protagonist’s redemption arc is laughable and by the time the movie reaches its much talked about climax, I just don’t care anymore ».

He went on to add, “But I guess it shouldn’t really be a shocker for a movie that makes you believe in ‘divine intervention’ by earning plenty, especially at a time when you’re trying hard as a country to prove the scientific relevance of a mythological character.” So, really, it all fits together.”

For the uninitiated, the film is about a mythological folklore where a deal between a landlord and villagers goes awry. It also touches on some traditional practices like Buta Kola (animistic ritual dance) as well as Kambala (buffalo race) which are quite popular in the interior of Karnataka and their culture.

Talking about Kantara, the film is also directed by Rishab Shetty, who plays the male lead in the film. Also starring Achyuth Kumar, Pramod Shetty, Sapthami Gowda, among others, the film was initially released only in Kannada. However, due to its popularity, it was later released in other languages including Malayalam and Hindi. The Kannada version hit the big screens on September 30.
