English Vinglish To Hindi Medium, watch these 5 Hindi centric Bollywood movies

Bollywood over the years has produced some fantastic films that pay homage to the Hindi language and its beauty, taking audiences through films that showcase the strength and pride of the Hindi language. Celebrating the importance and recognition of India’s mother tongue, from Sridevi’s ‘English Vinglish’ to Shah Rukh Khan’s ‘Pardes’, here are some of the Hindi-centric films:

English Vinglish

The 2012 Sridevi starrer is directed by Gauri Shinde and was applauded by the audience. The film centered on a middle-class mother who is ridiculed for her Hindi by her children and husband. To earn their respect, Sridevi’s character tries to learn English. Along the way, the film teaches how his mother tongue makes a difference in his personality.

Hindi Medium

The 2017 drama stars Irrfan Khan and Saba Qamar in lead roles. It revolves around the life of a middle-class family hoping to increase their social mobility by trying to turn their lives around in order to help their only daughter gain admission to Delhi’s top English medium school. With a perfect comedic touch, the film focuses on the importance of Hindi language in modern days.

Pardes

The Shah Rukh Khan and Mahima Choudhary starrer was released in 1997 and is directed by Subhash Ghai. The film revolves around Ganga who is tested by Mahima Choudhary, who hails from a small village, marrying an NRI Arjun who cannot accept the middle class ways. Along the way, she falls in love with his best friend, who accepts her for who she is.

Namaste London

Akshay Kumar and Katrina Kaif’s hit film ‘Namastey London’ is a romantic comedy in which a couple who are at constant rift with each other ends up getting married. Katrina Kaif’s character, born and raised in London, meets Akshay Kumar’s desi-Indian character and in the process falls in love with him, his country and his language.

Chupke Chupke

Dharmendra, Sharmila Tagore and Amitabh Bachchan’s popular movie ‘Chupke Chupke’ was released in 1975 and is one of the best gems created in Bollywood. The ‘shudh Hindi’ and its meaning spoken throughout the film comes with a bowl of comedy blunders with plenty of twists and a meaningful ending.
