EXCLUSIVE: Neeta Lulla reveals Aishwarya Rai Bachchan was initially considered for Darr. talks about designing denim suits, watch : Bollywood News

Aishwarya Rai Bachchan was originally considered to play the lead role in Yash Chopra’s 1993 film Darr. In an exclusive interview with Bollywood Hungamacostume designer Neeta Lulla revealed that Aishwarya had a look test for the film, but ultimately couldn’t take the role because she was preparing to compete in the Miss World pageant.

“I met Aishwarya for the first time at Yash (Chopra) Ji’s office, where he was thinking of casting her DarrLulla said. “I don’t think many people know that. So we did a look test and she called me and said let’s do a look with her. When I saw her, Yash ji and I discussed and said she is beautiful. But she said maybe she won’t make it because she’s going to the Miss World pageant and she left and that’s what happened.”

Rai eventually won the Miss World title in 1994 and her Bollywood career took off shortly after. She made her film debut in Mani Ratnam’s 1997 film Iruvarand has since starred in many successful films including Devdas, Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam, and Doom 2.

In the interview, Lulla also talked about designing Rai’s costumes Jeans, a 1998 film directed by Shankar. Lula continued, “He said I’m doing this movie called Jeans and I would like you to draw me the whole movie and I did. And working with Shankar was an absolute pleasure.”

Lulla said that she and Shankar would meet every week to discuss looks for the film. I used to meet Shankar every week to figure out the look and everything and at that time it was not about getting the whole script, you would take one scene at a time, one part of the song at a time and within those 10 days, I would travel from the country to get fabrics and start stitching them because that was also the time when brands were not in the country.

Lulla said she was excited by the challenge of designing for a larger-than-life film Jeans. “So you had to give something that was larger than life and Shankar wanted something that you’ve never seen before and for me that’s what excites me about cinema, that larger than life aspect and trying to get something that’s visually a treat to watch,” Lula said. “That process was something else. I mean I’ll never forget it and yes, I’m working on different techniques to your clothing techniques.”

Lulla said she was proud of the work she did Jeans, and that he believes helped make the film a success. “I can only attribute it to the fact that I studied fashion and it was possible,” Lulla said. “Well, it was kind of a sauce, technical details, visualization, everything that was included and incorporated and that’s how the magic of the dream became. Jeans it happened.”
