EXCLUSIVE: “This Boycott culture is a political game. I don’t believe in such policies,” says Manoj Desai : Bollywood News

In recent months, a new and disturbing trend of ‘Boycott Bollywood’ has emerged on social media, with various users calling for a boycott of films, actors or songs. But whether this so-called “Boycott Culture” will negatively affect a film’s overall business is a question that remains unanswered. In a recent interview with Bollywood Hungama, veteran film exhibitor and theater owner Manoj Desai spoke about this worrying trend. Interestingly, Desai claims that this is just a political game and that there can never actually be a Bollywood boycott.

EXCLUSIVE: “This Boycott culture is a political game. I don’t believe in such policies,” says Manoj Desai

“This ‘boycott culture’ is a political game. I don’t believe in such policies. I sincerely ask the public – if everything is fine, go to a theater and watch a film on 70 mm, the big screen. According to me Bollywood movies will come back with best colors and for that, five to six movies like Pathan they must come and run to the theaters non-stop. Today’s culture is such that movies don’t last until their 25th week since they hit OTT platforms. I think they should run for 10 to 15 weeks in theatres, only then Bollywood will come back. I screened an Odiya movie here and it went down. Kantara it’s a movie I never thought would work. I never dreamed she would stay home for so long. Even this Friday, Kantara it’s playing,” says Desai as he continues to insist that the “boycott culture” is a game.

Later, sharing his views on how Bollywood can make a comeback and why there can never be a boycott of Bollywood, the presenter continued, “There can never be a boycott of Bollywood. How many south movies will you get? Like recently I spoke to Boney Kapoor and asked him to dub his movie South in Hindi. He declined saying that he would prefer to keep the film as is. And this was a well-received film. In Chembur, there was a 3 am and a 6 am show and both were domestic. Bollywood has been running for years – from the silent era to today and there have been such memorable films. All this must return… and where is the music? Where is the music from movies of the past?’
