Fire of Love Producers Open New Studio Space New York – The Hollywood Reporter

by Stewart Cole

Sandbox Films — the nonfiction studio behind the Oscar nominee Fire of Love — opened new offices in New York, with ATMOS theater.

In addition to the 22-seat theater, the studio, located in the Flatiron District, includes two editing suites and a multimedia facility designed to support a variety of production needs.

“We put a lot of thought into the design. We want our nerdy, indie doc creators to feel as loved as our A-list celebrities. Because, to us, they’re A-list celebrities,” says founder Greg Boustead The Hollywood Reporter. “These document spaces don’t traditionally have the love, the glitz or the fanfare.”

Boustead, who leads Sandbox with head of production and development Jessica Harrop, notes that the goal is to bring the teams behind Sandbox productions, which focus on science-centric storytelling, under one roof. The facilities will soon be used by Sandbox production Nocturnalwhich centers on a young female scientist studying moths in the forests of the Eastern Himalayas.

Several documentary filmmakers have already taken up residence in the editing suites and screenings of drafts for Sundance Film Festival contenders have already taken place in the theater, which will also be used for AMPAS screenings.

Harrop adds, “Our hope is to have artists in and out all the time. We really want this to be a revolving door coming in. We want to have community screenings in the evenings while doing sound mixing and color correction during the day.”

The company also recently completed its annual retreat, Camp Sandbox, where filmmakers brainstorm and troubleshoot their next and current projects. Sandbox’s upcoming slate includes an organ transplant doc Confessions of a Good Samaritann by director Penny Lane, and Arc of Oblivionwhich focuses on the world of records and record-keeping, directed by Ian Cheney and executive produced by Werner Herzog.
