Forget everything you know about Ellie Kemper’s cheerful portrayal Kimmy Schmidt and get ready to see a different side of her… with a little help from YellowstoneLuke Grimes.
The two actors star in Netflix’s romantic drama Happiness for Beginners, in which Kemper’s character Helen is miles away from the infectious, always-smiling Kimmy.
An adaptation of Kathryn Sender’s novel of the same name, the film sees Ellen rebuild her life after a divorce and embark on a survival trek on the Appalachian Trail.

There, she reunites with Jake (Grimes), her younger brother’s best friend, who reminds her that life doesn’t stop after a bad breakup. And, as we’re talking about a rom-com, Helen is guaranteed to get more than she bargained for when she realizes she might actually like him.
Disillusioned with life, Helen was an “interesting” character for Kemper, he said. Entertainment Weekly.
“I loved that Helen is grumpy,” the Bridesmaids star said.
“She’s a bit of a pessimist. She’s going through a very difficult time and she doesn’t really believe in the goodness of things,” he continued.

“I felt like it would be fun to play because it’s so different from the upbeat, funny, bright-eyed women I’ve played in the past.
“I wasn’t talking about that on purpose, but once I read that script, I thought, ‘Oh, this is it, this is really interesting to me.’
Kemper also weighed in on her palpable chemistry with Grimes, which you can get a glimpse of in the trailer.
“With Luke, we read all this chemistry and he was great from the start,” she revealed.
“Not only is he a fantastic actor, but he’s really laid-back and low-key in real life.”
Happiness for Beginners premieres on Netflix on July 27.
