Acclaimed director Christopher Nolan received his first Golden Globe at the 2024 Best Director awards night for his film. Oppenheimer. The director remembered his late friend Heath Ledger while accepting his award on Sunday night.
“The only time I've ever been on this stage was to accept one of these on behalf of our dear friend Heath Ledger, and that was complicated and challenging for me,” Nolan said during his speech. “And in the middle of the speech, I looked up and Robert Downey Jr. caught my eye and gave me a look of love and support — the same look he's giving me now, the same love and support he's shown to so many people in our community for so many years. I thought it would be simpler to accept it for myself, but as a director, of course, being here, I suddenly realize that I can only accept it on behalf of the people. As directors, we bring people together and try to make them give their best.”
In his speech, Nolan thanked Robert Downey Jr, Cillian Murphy, Matt Damon, Florence Pugh and Emily Blunt and “the incredible work of our amazing crew.”
In 2009, Ledger posthumously won Best Supporting Actor for Nolan's Joker essay The Dark Ipult. Ledger's family accepted the award while Nolan was in attendance.
